Notes

  • Known as Aunt May.
1881 census: age 3; living in Colwall with Matthew and Naomi Manton, who are said to be her parents.
1891 census: age 14 born Ledbury, living with her parents in Plaistow.
1901 census: presumably the "Mary" Mutlow (aged 24 born Ledbury, unmarried) who was living at Plaistow with her brother Ethelbert, employed as his Housekeeper.
1911 census: May Mutlow aged 34, unmarried, living with her brother Ethelbert at "The Elmes" Ledbury.
Ethelbert died in the October of 1911, and at some point between that date and 1917 May moved to York (her brother Stratford left York for Hull in 1911 or 1912).
Her daughter Nancy was born out of wedlock in York in the December of 1916, when May would have been about 40 years old.  According to Nancy's birth certificate she was at that time a "Boarding House Keeper" of 48 Walmgate York.
Presumably the Miss Mutlow of 23 Landsdowne Terrace, Lawrence Street, who was listed in Mrs Fanny Mutlow's address book (information from William E Mutlow); her daughter Annie married from this address in 1947.
According to the York Cemetery burial register (copy obtained by WEM), she was a Widow (rather than a Spinster) of 50 Petergate (this address being Scotts the Pork Butcher, the house of her daughter and son-in-law).  Buried in The Lawn Park Section Grave no 29/6983C.
The headstone (white with lead lettering) bears the inscription "Sweet Remembrances of May Mutlow.  Died 21 June 1950 aged 73".
