Notes
- Family tradition has it that she was working at the residence of Lord Scarborough at the time she became pregnant with her son Edward and that Lord Scaborough himself may have been the father. This seems unlikely, and the story may have come about
because Lumley was the family name of the Scarboroughs.
At the time of the 1841 census she was age 15 and employed as a female servant on a farm in Wheldrake (the farmer being a William Ward age 35, a married man with 5 children). Her baby was born in Wheldrake in 1846, and in 1850 she married John Elliot
(as Jane Lumley of Weldrake, of full age); she was living with him at the time of the 1851 census (Jane Elliot age 24 born Wheldrake, no children). Her son Edward (age 4) was living with her parents in Wheldrake, and may have been brought up by them.
Neither she nor her husband have been located in the 1861, 1871 or 1881 censuses, so it is possible that the couple may have emigrated.
