Notes
- 1841 census: Shoemaker at East Bridgford with wife & 3 children.
1851 census: Cordwainer age 40, born East Bridgford, living in East Bridgford with wife and 4 children.
By the time of the 1861 census, however, he had given up shoemaking and become a "Grocer and Baker". This may have happened around 1853, since White's Directory of Notts for that year has two entries for James Mason at East Bridgford; one as a
Shoemaker and one as a Baker & Shopkeeper.
1861 census: age 60 (error, should read 50), married, living at East Bridgford with his unmarried daughter Hannah (age 26, Housekeeper), and his youngest son James, 14. His wife Ann was not at home (or anywhere in East Bridgford or Shelford) on
census day.
1871 census: Grocer and Farmer of 8 acres, age 60 born East Bridgford, living in East Bridgford with his wife and his 7 year-old grandson Eddie.
1881 census: age 70, widower, Retired Grocer, living alone in East Bridgford.
There is a headstone in St Peter's churchyard for a James Mason (probably this man), but the inscription is unclear.
Age 73 at death according to GRO.
According to the National Probate Calender he was James Mason late of East Bridgford, who died at East Bridgford 3 Feb 1884: his will was proved at Nottingham 28 Mar 1884 to his executors (Charles Clough of EBridgford Schoolmaster and Hanwell Holmes
Carter of Nottm Solicitor); effects valued at £120/3/6d. The will was written on 24 May 1883 (JGW has copy), when he described himself as a retired grocer of East Bridgford: he left his "household furniture and effects, policy of assusrance [and] the
residue of his personal estate" [plus] all his "cottages or tenements and premisies situate at East Bridgford" to his two [surviving] sons John Mason and James Mason absolutely in equal shares as tenants in common".
Although he was originally a shoemaker and then a grocer/baker, all three of his sons became butchers.
