1871 census: Butcher age 34 born East Bridgford, widower with children aged 8 and 6 and a Servant, living in East Bridgford in the house next door to his father's.
1881 census: Butcher age 44, widower, living with son and 2 daughters in East Bridgford.
Inherited (jointly with his brother James) all of his father's possessions under the terms of James Mason's will dated 24 May 1883 (proved 28 Mar 1884): this included his father's "cottages or tenements and premises situate at East Bridgford".
Age 50 at the date of his second marriage to Emma Jane Pickford, a 39 year-old widow.
1891 census: Butcher and Farmer age 52, living in East Bridgford with his second wife, her 16 year-old son and two young children from his second marriage, plus a domestic servant. The house next door is occupied by his son John. According to the
1891 census he was deaf, but the 1901 census does not confirm this.
1901 census: Farmer & Butcher (Employer) age 64 born East Bridgford, living in East Bridgford with his wife and 2 children.
Age 65 at death according to headstone in churchyard; buried with his first wife (who had died 34 years earlier).
