- His father Edwin was 59 years old when John was born, and died when John was 3.
1901 census: age 5 born Nottingham; living at 3 Ashbourne Street with his widowed mother, his brother and his sister.
Brought up by his mother at 48 Edgar Rise and by her relatives in Shelford.
Served in WWI in the Royal Field Artillery; regimental number 127421, awarded Military Medal (now with son PJA), when aged 21 and a Lance Bombadier in the RFA Attd 311st Bde RFA (TF), gazetted 6 Aug 1918, for service in France. Awarded Victory and
British Medals at the end of WWI, rank Bombadier. Deeply affected by his experiences in the trenches; lifelong member of the British Legion. Army service record has not survived.
Age 25 at first marriage in 1921, home address 48 Edgar Rise Nottm (mother's house); occupation "Hosiery Warehouseman". His first wife Jennie died in childbirth only 15 months after they were married.
Age 30 at second marriage. Living at 8 Linby Close (council house, Sherwood Estate) 1926. At 109 Lenton Boulevard in the 1930s, 80 Bedale Rd l936, 1939 moved to 48 Austen Ave (mother-in-law's house). Moved to Denton, Bingham Rd Radcliffe in 1944;
later in bungalow built in garden, then at 35 Fernwood Drive, Shelford Rd Radcliffe.
Retired as Managing Director of William Gibson & Sons Ltd, hosiery manufacters, where he began work as an office boy.
President of the Radcliffe Bowls Club and a vice-president of the Radcliffe football and cricket clubs; vice-president of Nottingham Forest Football Club.
Ashes buried at Radcliffe Cemetery with those of Clarrie; headstone.
