Notes
- Eldest son and heir of his father according to Poulson (1841), who describes him as "Edward Ombler Esq of Camerton Hall and of Trinity College Cambridge, barrister at law".
Edward Ombler, Barrister at Law of the Middle Temple when he wrote his will on 19 Oct 1848, leaving his estate to his brother George "Stuart" Ombler. Executor was Corwell Baron Wilson of Furnivals Inn, Solicitor.
The will was proved at the Probate Court for Canterbury on 31 Oct 1848 so he presumably died that month, although there is no death registered in this name in England in the Dec Quarter of 1848 and so it is probable that he died abroad.
A letter written by him to a John Jaquelin Ambler, dated Camerton 6 Dec 1825, is published on the "User Home Pages" of the FamilyTreeMaker.com website (taken from "Some Prominent Virigina Families" by Louise duBellet, Baltimore 1976). It was written
in response to a letter from Ambler, who was a member of a family of that name (one married Chief Justice John Marshall), and was enquiring about possible links to families of the name in Yorkshire. A Richard Ambler is said to have been born in
Yorkshire on 24 Dec 1690 and to have emigrated to York County Virginia in 1716; his parents are said to have been John Ambler and Elizabeth Burkadike of York. Another version begins with a Thomas Ambler born 1560, who was said to be the father of a
Richard Ambler born 1586/87 in England.
John Jaquelin Ambler supplied Edward Ombler with a copy of his arms, and Edward replied to say that he had no doubt that they were members of the same family because of the exact resemblance with his own arms, apart from differences in the crests. He
also stated that he believed that Ambler was the original spelling of his surname, although they had used the Ombler spelling for five generations, for some plate belonging to his family was originally marked "RA" and then corrected to "RoA".
According to the "Biographical Record of Fairfield County Connecticut, J H Beers & Co, Chicago 1899" the Ambler surname sometimes appears as "Aubler of DeAubrey" and the shield is "sa, on a fesse or between three pheons, a lion pass. guard, gre".
These arms, according to Walker's Yorkshire Pedigrees (1942), belonged to the family of a John Ambler who was Sherrif of York in 1727/28; he may therefore be the father of the Richard Ambler who emigrated to Virginia in 1716.
